No Bad Cats!

Can Your Cat Talk to You?

If your cat could talk to you what would he or she say? Cats need to communicate just as much as humans need to communicate to one another to talk about their problems or good things happening our lives. Your cat has a genuine need to communicate with you and attempts to do so in way you can understand. Cats use body language to communicate what they need, how they are feeling and how they want to be treated.

How do you know if your cat is upset about something?

Dirty and smelly litter boxes are one thing that really upsets cats. Your cat can behave badly and upset you but he is only trying to communicate with you that he is displeased about the condition of his litter box. Your cat may find a “bathroom” in an inappropriate area of the house because their litter box is not clean enough for them to use. By nature cats are very clean animals and do not like messiness, especially their “toilet”.

Most cats communicate with humans by vocalizing out loud, talking in a language only your cat can understand. Siamese cats can be very verbal. Excessive talking is an attention seeking behavior but can also be a learned behavior. They learn that when they make noise you pay attention to them by going over to  get them to be quiet. This usually doesn’t work as they will continue making noise until they get the attention they want! They can also vocalize when there are changes going on around them such as a new member of the household or moving to new home. Constant vocalization can be a sign of a medical problem. If vocalization is a learned behavior you can retrain your cat by ignoring the cat until he stops and is quiet, then go over to your cat and give him some attention.

Cat kneading or treading goes back to kittenhood and is way to express pleasure and comfort. This can be painful for humans but it is important for your cat that he shows you his affection. If your cat does this, get a pillow or blanket before sitting or lying down so when your cat starts treading it is not painful for you. This way you won’t have stop your cat from showing you their pleasure.
