No Bad Cats!

Toilet Train My Cat

For the most part, any cat you bring into your home will already be litter trained. However, in case your new cat has not yet learned how to use the toilet (and yes, this is possible), then you’ll have to teach them. Like anything else you want to teach your cat, you’ll have to be patient about it. Your cat is capable of learning, but will do so on their own schedule, not yours. However, toilet training your cat can be a great thing which can keep your home from smelling like a litter box.

These steps can help you to successfully toilet train your cat:

  1. Begin by moving your cat’s litter box to a location near the bathroom door. You cat will catch on to the new spot immediately, don’t worry.
  2. After about a week in the new location, put something underneath the litter box to raise it up. You can use floor mats, boxes, whatever is handy.
  3. Gradually raise up the litter box, about an inch per day until it is as high up as your toilet seat.
  4. Lift the lid of the toilet to give you cat an opportunity to learn to walk on it.
  5. Next, move the litter box on top of the toilet seat. Leave it here for a week or two.
  6. The moment of truth: take away the litter box and place a metal bowl inside the toilet. Place a little litter from the box in the bowl so your cat will catch on to what to do here.
  7. Next, you can try to teach your cat the right posture to use. If your cat stands on the seat with all fours, try holding their front legs (if they will tolerate this).
  8. Once your cat has learned the right posture for squatting, lift their hindquarters out. Be patient with your cat, it may take them a while to learn to balance in this position.
  9. Remove the litter from the bowl and replace it with water, adding a little more every day.
  10. Once your cat is used to the water, you’ll be ready to remove it from the toilet.

Toilet training your cat will take a while and involves some significant effort on your part. However, the reward is a litter free home and freedom from cleaning the litter box; making having a cat around the house a much more pleasant thing.
